Reading Problems

The labels ADD and ADHD are nothing more than names for symptoms—behaviors. You notice these behaviors so someone says you must have a professional diagnosis. The psychologist has lists of the behaviors, and if your child exhibits a given percentage of these he diagnoses that, yes, your child has the condition.

Before going to a psychologist, try for two or three months to completely eliminate all prepared foods and boxed mixes with their long lists of chemical ingredients. Eat plain, natural foods— fruits and vegetables; meats and eggs; and whole, unrefined grains. Also eliminate or greatly reduce sugar. Allow no soft drinks. The artificially sweetened ones are worse than the sugared ones. Make lemonade with Stevia, a natural sweetener that at this writing is deemed safe. Use only whole-grain, unsweetened cereals. Buy fruits and juices with no sugar added. You could help your busy schedule by including this work in your schooling. Let children read grocery labels and nutrition articles and talk with you about the information. Assign them the home economics task of cooking things “from scratch.”

Children who do not respond to this nutrition treatment may have some kind of hormonal imbalance, and what are currently called “alternative” doctors may test for that and treat with natural nutrition supplements. Drugs should be a last resort, if used at all.

A different kind of problem is crossed-dominance, and this affects about ten percent of children. Refer to the Appendix for information about that.

The nutrition regimen should help with about half of today's learning difficulties. Kevin never was cured of his hyperactivity. He spent summers digging a fishpond, caring for horses, and other vigorous activities. As soon as he was old enough, he joined the volunteer fire department and was on call for accidents and all kinds of emergencies, as well as fires. He loved the pager calling him any hour of the day or night. Any community needs a few people like Kevin.
